Five decades ago, Catholics in the U.S. wanted to respond to famine in Africa. Could people who were hungry be helped through Lenten prayers, fasting and almsgiving? Yes! The help came in the form of a small cardboard box, marking the beginning of “Operation Rice Bowl” in 1975 in parishes in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Today, as millions of people worldwide face extreme hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition, our help is still needed. We can do our part through CRS Rice Bowl by answering Jesus’ invitation us to share bread for life with our sisters and brothers—so all may live with dignity.
