Since October 2023, a humanitarian crisis has escalated across the Holy Land with a total siege on Gaza following an unprecedented attack on Israel. Since then, more than 90% of the population has been displaced multiple times; hundreds of thousands of people are facing hunger; and tens of thousands have died. Living conditions are desperate as people struggle to survive amid continued deprivation and distress.
This conflict has extended to Lebanon, where hundreds of thousands of people were displaced along the southern border in late 2024, and are now returning to damaged homes and infrastructure.
At the same time, Syria stands at a critical crossroads following the collapse of its government in December 2024, marking the end of a 50-year regime. For many, this moment signals a potential new beginning—a chance for renewal and transformation. Yet, uncertainty looms over the Syria’s future.
Catholic Relief Services and our local partners have been providing critical assistance. Our longstanding presence across the region allows us to quickly adapt and mobilize to a sensitive, complex and rapidly-changing context—our work is guided by deep understanding and trusted relationships with the communities we serve. Across affected areas, we are providing food, shelter, cash assistance, hygiene supplies and care for people’s emotional well-being. Once the context has stabilized, CRS will transition to sustainable recovery efforts, including the rebuilding of homes and livelihoods, once the context has stabilized.
